Coaching Changes In Area
Thursday, June 25, 2009
The coaching carousel is in full effect in the local area this week. The Jacksonville Journal-Courier reports Franklin has re-hired Joe Kuhlmann as its boys' basketball coach Kuhlmann was the school's coach for three seasons until 2008, when he left for a year to pursue a master's degree. He replaces Willie Smith, who was not re-hired by the School Board in March. And a husband and wife duo from Michigan are taking coaching positions at Carrollton High School. The State Journal Register reports Erin Moore has been named the new volleyball coach, while her husband Joel will take the reins of the girls' basketball program. Erin Moore replaces Kyle Schwartz, and Joel Moore replaces Jennifer Gwillim. The former coaches left to take different jobs.

New Football-Only Conference A No-Go
Tuesday, June 23, 2009
The idea of a new "football-only" conference involving Jacksonville and 13 other high schools is on the back-burner, at least for now. The original idea was for the proposed conference to begin play in the 2010 football season. It would have involved all schools in the Central State Eight, plus Rochester and five schools from the Mid-State Six in the Peoria area. The proposal among some athletic directors of the two existing conferences called for dividing the 14 schools into a pair of seven team divisions. But a meeting earlier this month apparently revealed some schools were not at all happy about the proposed make-up of the two divisions. WLDS-WEAI Sports has further learned the unhappiness by some schools has caused the idea to be put aside, at least for the time being.

IC Expects Big FB Class
Friday, June 12, 2009
Illinois College officials say one of the largest football recruiting classes in history is expected to join the school later this summer. Second year Coach Garret Campbell says he has commitments from 47 freshmen who plan to play football this fall. That's in addition to 52 returning lettermen. Campbell says his staff worked hard to assemble a recruiting class based on character, background, competitiveness and a passion for football. The new class includes recruits from California, Michigan, Kansas, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Missouri in addition to 35 students from Illinois. Area freshmen among the group include Routt graduate Tim Denney, Triopia grad Jacob Whited, Kohl Young of Virginia and Konner Beer of Waverly. IC opens its 2009 season September 5th at Millikin University.
