Giannoulias talks economy, change at IC Sunday

U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias addresses the crowd at IC.

He gives new meaning to the term “Blueboy.”

Democratic nominee for President Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat Alexi Giannoulias made a stop at Illinois College yesterday.

The current State Treasurer says he’s proud that he's the only candidate running for the Senate to spend time in central and southern Illinois.

Extra chairs needed to be brought into the room inside the Caine Student Center to accommodate the audience comprised mainly of IC students. Giannoulias says no matter the demographic of the audience, his themes of improving the economy, creating jobs, and electing new leadership remains true.

The 33-year-old candidate was the youngest state treasurer in the nation’s history when elected in 2007. Now, Giannoulias is making his first foray into national politics. He says unlike his Republican opponent Mark Kirk, he is “anti-D.C.” and has never taken money from corporate lobbyists or political action committees, something he says no other Illinois candidate for the U.S. Senate has done.

Giannoulias’ visit to Jacksonville was sponsored by the IC Democrats.
